Be the First on the Slopes

Your author: Powder Monkey November 26th, 2008 - Posted by: Powder Monkey

With all this early snow, 2008 is the year to ski in December. And there are some great pre-Christmas bargains out there. We have selected a couple of the best deals in the snow-sure resorts of Tignes and La Plagne.

Ski La Source boasts a portfolio of beautiful chalets in Montchavin & Les Coches. The two traditional alpine villages are lift-linked to the La Plagne ski area, where the snow is already stacking up. At the time of writing there are 75cm of snow in Plagne Centre (2000m), 110 cm on the Bellecote glacier and it looks, from these images, like there is no shortage of snow lower down.

Fifty Percent Off Family Lift Passes in Tignes and Val d’Isere

Your author: Powder Monkey November 13th, 2008 - Posted by: Powder Monkey

Tignes and Val d’Isere are encouraging more families to hit the slopes in the Espace Killy this winter by slashing lift pass prices by 50%. All winter, families purchasing three 6-day Espace Killy passes at the standard rate will get any subsequent passes for half price. The offer applies to 2 adults and their children, provided they are under the age of 18 (21 for students). The preferential rates will really benefit large families and those with grown-up kids, who would otherwise be charged adult rates, equating to 100s of euros of savings. To see how much your family could save visit the Tignes or Val d’Isere website.
Tip: Take ID for every member of the family to the lift pass office to prove the ages of your children and the family relationship.

The twin resorts of Tignes and Val have also put together some economical accommodation and lift pass packages aimed specifically at families. The great value packages are available throughout the season, including during school holidays, and start at just 319€ per person per week.

Ski Holiday Bargains in December

Your author: Powder Monkey November 7th, 2008 - Posted by: Powder Monkey

The well-reported dump of snow across the French Alps last week has fuelled expectation among winter sports fans of another bumper snow year. Over half a metre of snow fell in some places and, although it warmed up over the weekend, there has been a steady accumulation of snow above 2500m for the last couple of nights. Die-hard skiing enthusiasts are already enjoying knee-deep powder on the glacier in Tignes although other French resorts are not scheduled to open for several weeks. Here in Chamonix the lifts are not due to open fully until Christmas while most of the high-altitude resorts are opening between the end of November and the middle of December. Pre-Christmas there are some great bargains waiting to be snapped up and with conditions like these you won’t want to miss out.

Ski Sunday - Save Time & Money

Your author: Powder Monkey October 30th, 2008 - Posted by: Powder Monkey

The vast majority of ski holidays, both packages and DIY, are sold on a 7 night basis from Saturday to Saturday. Just a small percentage of accommodation providers offer week long breaks starting on Sunday, yet there are many advantages to arriving a day later. On route, quieter airports, quieter airspace and quieter roads mean you’ll get to resort more quickly and with less hassle than the Saturday masses. On arrival, fewer people in the lift pass office and the ski hire shop mean you won’t waste valuable slope time getting kitted out. And on the Saturday of your holiday the fact that everyone else is on the move means you get the mountain virtually to yourselves.

You might think that these privileges would come at a premium. In fact, opting for Sunday travel also saves you £££. Sunday ski flights are on average 20% cheaper than those on Saturday. Choose to ski in the low season and you could pick up a real bargain. Latest offers from Snowjet include Gatwick to Chambéry on Sunday 4th January from £29 one way.

Read on for the pick of accommodation providers who offer Sunday arrivals.
