Free Tickets to FIS Alpine World Ski Championships
The most important event on the 2009 skiing calendar, the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, will be held in Val d’Isere from 2nd-15th February. When Val won the bid to host the championships the organising committee vowed the event would be free and accessible to all. True to their word, free race invitations and transport vouchers are now available from www.valdisere2009.org. The website has received 100,000 invitation requests to date and attendance is expected to run to 200,000 over the course of the two week event, making it the biggest yet.

As well as the hundreds of thousands of spectators, Val d’Isere will also be welcoming a record number of competing nations: 67 in total. The truly international line-up will include outside-the-box countries such as Brazil and Mongolia. The battle for the places, however, is likely to be fought out between the well-established skiing nations, such as France, Austria, Switzerland and the US. France, as hosts, will be particularly hungry for dominance. The event has not been held on French soil since Grenoble 1968 when Val d’Isere local, Jean Claude Killy, swept up all the golds. In 2009 French hopes are pinned on Jean-Baptiste Grange, bronze medallist at the 2007 World Championships in Sweden and winner of the first event on the 2008/2009 world cup circuit two weeks ago. In the women’s event, there is an outside chance for Britain’s top female skier, Chemmy Alcott, who is in flying form after finish 17th in her first race of the season.
The Val d’Isere 2009 World Championships promise to be a real spectacle, with the men’s and ladies’ racecourses set facing each other on the Bellevarde and the Solaise slopes. The finishing area is close to the heart of the resort so it can easily be accessed on foot, as well as on skis.
If you’d like to attend the event, you’d better get in there quick. If you can’t find accommodation in Val d’Isere itself, try neighbouring Tignes or nearby Sainte Foy. And you can book flights to Chambery, Val d’Isere’s local airport with Snowjet.
